ANSWERS FROM A YOGA TEACHER

I often get asked similar questions when people find out I am a yoga teacher. I thought I would answer some of these questions for you so you can get to know me a little better!

1. Do students ever fart in your class?

I have had students fart in my class. No, I don’t laugh, but sometimes I want to. I just pretend it never happened and don’t make eye contact with anyone.

2. Are you a vegan?

I do eat meat! And burritos, and ice cream, and pizza, and so many other “naughty” foods…I also try to eat clean (less sugar, carbs, and alcohol) when I have the energy and discipline. I just feel better when I’m not eating sugar or obsessive carbs. I do not, however, believe in fad dieting, juice cleanses, and fasting. I have tried a couple of them and I will never again. I believe in moderation and balance, and then grace when that doesn’t happen.

3. Are you flexible?

I am flexible, and yes, I can do the splits. This question always makes me laugh because usually it’s asked by men, and come on, guys, it’s obvious why you’re asking the question. Maybe try to be more subtle next time. And no, you don’t have to be flexible to start coming to yoga! I always use this analogy: Do you take a shower because you’re clean? No! You take a shower to get clean. You come to yoga to get flexible.

4. I can’t do a handstand, should I still come to your class?

I could care less if you can do a handstand, or an arm balance, or any type of inversion. What excites me is when you’re excited about growing in your practice, whatever that may entail. I do enjoy working with students on inversions because that is where one of my passions lies.

5. What yoga leggings do you like the best?

My favorite brand of yoga pants is called Liquido Active. They are expensive, but so worth it. Teachers, if you apply for their teacher program, you get 25% off! They feel like liquid, and they now have shipping in the US for just $6. These are all I wear in the summer because they are so breathable. https://liquidoactive.com

6. Are you 420 friendly?

I am not an avid pot smoker. I have tried it a few times, but because I believe in moderation, it’s not something that I want to be doing all the time. I do LOVE wine. I will sometimes have a glass of wine in the evenings, and then the weekends are usually filled with friends, good food, and good wine!

7. I’ve never tried yoga. Where should I start? What do I bring? Wear?

Start from the beginning. Try a beginner’s group class. This way you can ease your body into it. Oftentimes, when you jump right into the power classes, you lose some of the basic alignment. This can cause injury in the future. Start humble. Come to yoga like you’re just starting to train for a marathon. You don’t just go out and run 26 miles. You start with one or two and then progress. Wear your workout clothes, and bring a mat, towel and water. (We have all of this at the studio if you need to rent)
